You can still be confused about the difference between vector graphs and raster graphics if you are new to the study of design. In reality, the interpretation of the difference can often be more difficult than the question! However, we are going to banish this mystery forever, as we discuss in a way that is easy to understand the difference between vector graphics and raster graphics.
A raster picture is like a pixel mosaic. Each pixel is actually a small square that has a particular color, and they are arranged to produce a picture like tiles in a mosaic. More pixels in a unit area indicate higher quality and resolution. You normally do not see each pixel without a bad resolution, or without zooming in on a raster image. Zoom to isolate individual pixels allows you to edit images using a tool with a high degree of accuracy.
Just remove or adjust the color of each pixel until you achieve the desired effect. Raster graphics are best used if the smooth transition between shades and colors – e.g. in photographs – is significant. Raster graphics are also useful for catalogues, posters, postcards, paperwork and other tasks on a regular basis. Raster images require harder disc space than images in vector format, even though they look the same.
Graphics of vectors
A vector graphic does not consist of pixels, but of paths with a vector or a mathematical formula that governs its shape and color. When you closely look at a vector image, much like a kid connects the game with dots. This is the vector. Due to the mathematical concept of vectors, vector graphics can be scaled to scale without losing quality or gaining any of the blurry, pixelated qualities you see when you zoom into raster images. Vector graphics are also suitable for logos and other projects that have to stay sharp in multiple dimensions.
How to pick one among vector graphics versus raster graphics?
If you do not know exactly what graphics, you want to use, follow these instructions. If you are editing multi-colored pictures, pick raster images. Choose vector images if you draw something with a limited number of colors.
You can also create a project that uses images and logos or both. Finally, note that you can always easily transform a vector graph into a raster format. It does not work in both directions, however. Usually, a raster file cannot be transformed into a vector file.
